Area nonprofits recieve city funds through grants

By Ben Stuart
Staff Writer

The Homer Foundation announced this week more than $94,000 in grants to area nonprofit organizations through the City of Homer Grants Program and a special allocation approved by the Homer City Council on March 24.

The special allocation provided $50,000 to the Homer Foundation "to recognize the need of the Homer Hockey Association and other organizations of need as recognized by the Homer Foundation."

The foundation awarded $36,000 to HHA for operations of the Homer Ice Rink/Kevin Bell Arena. It also awarded $2,000 to the Homer Little League for equipment purchase and field maintenance. The remaining $12,000 of the special allocation will be held while the foundation explores some collaborative initiative that might support area-wide recreation.

During the 2008 budget process, the council allocated $70,000 to the foundation for area nonprofits, with $20,000 earmarked as a pass-through grant for the Homer Senior Citizens Inc.

The foundation is currently drafting a Memorandum of Understanding with Homer Senior Citizens Inc. to determine the purpose and timing of the award.

Of the remaining $50,000, $20,000 was put into the city of Homer endowment fund with the rest available for awards to local nonprofits.

The endowment fund has grown to more than $100,000, said the foundation's executive director Joy Steward, and earned $5,750 in 2007.

The program also received $1,180 from the City of Kachemak's fund, making the total outlay from the program $36,930.

The following organizations applied for and received awards:

* Bunnell Street Gallery $3,470

* Center for Alaska Coastal Studies $4,480

* Cook InletKeeper $1,120

* Homer Children's Services $4,140

* Homer Community Food Pantry $5,820

* Homer Council on the Arts $2,240

* Hospice of Homer $4,920

* Kachemak Heritage Land Trust $2,130

* Kachemak Nordic Ski Club $3,240

* South Peninsula Haven House $5,370
