Maya Rourke

Maya Rourke of Homer graduated winter term from Western Oregon University, on the academic honor roll, with a bachelor's of science in dance and entrepreneurship. Maya plans to live in Homer where she will teach dance classes and develop her own business.

The following Homer High School students are award-winners in the Alaska Schools All State art competition: Rheanna Tussey, first place, fiber/textiles, "The Day After Judgment," goat skull mask made of paper mache; Tressa Lewis, third place, painting, an oil painted portrait of Bob Marley; Maya Rohr, honorable mention, multicultural paper mache, skull mask.

Connections

Note: Registration is open for Homer Connections grades 7-12 to attend an overnight field trip to Kasitsna Bay April 19-20. The trip will focus on exploring the intertidal zones of Jakalof and Kasitsna beaches. The trip is sponsored by Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. Pre-registration is required.

Programs

Faith Christian Preschool is now registering children 3-5 years old for the 2011-2012 preschool year. It is located at Faith Lutheran Church, 1000 Soundview Avenue, across from West Homer Elementary School. For options available, call 235-7600.

Homer Head Start is accepting applications for 3- to 5-year-olds for the 2011-2012 year. All are welcome. Center-based and home-based programs. For information, call 235-4322.

Scholarships

The USCGC Hickory is offering a $1,000 scholarship essay contest to graduating students in the Homer area. The essay is to explain the importance of lifelong community service and how the writer's strengths and weaknesses affect the organization(s) with which they volunteer. The scholarship may be used at any accredited two-year, four-year or trade school within the United States to help defray educational cost for the first year of schooling. The scholarship money will be forwarded to the college, university or trade school of the winner's choice in the winner's name upon receipt of a copy of the winner's confirmed admission to their chosen school.
