Week of Young Child: great success

The recent celebration of the Week of the Young Child was a great success, thanks to the many community members who participated. Before all else, kudos go to Jenny Martin who was the organizer and the energy behind all that happened.

Our thanks to Red for her open house at Raspberry Lane Preschool, Mayor Hornaday and the city council for the proclamation in recognition of the importance of early education, and Jill Lush of Birth 2 Three for playgroups, a luncheon and signing families up for the Imagination Library. Aaron Selbig hosted the excellent Coffee Table show for us on Wednesday. The Homer Bookstore hosted a story hour with Imagination Library registration: promoting literacy as always.

Thanks go out to Carol Swartz and the Kachemak Bay Campus for hosting speakers Sandra Miller and Lynn Dusek of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and Hilary Seitz, University of Alaska Anchorage professor of early childhood education. These speakers put aside busy agendas to come share their expertise with us and we thank them for the great conversations they facilitated.

Finally, we thank the Homer Public Library and the wonderful staff there for supporting the Imagination Library, from promoting sign-ups at story hours to providing the perfect place for our big Saturday kickoff. Last but not least, we must thank Bonnie Betley, PHN and director of the Imagination Library. Not only did she write the grant, she attended or facilitated just about every event for the Week of the Young Child.

Once again, Homer community collaboration proves an old adage: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
