Madrigal society singing

The Mud Bay Madrigal Society will sing a "Welcome to Spring" concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Bunnell Street Gallery. The selection of English and Italian madrigals range from springtime themes to tragic, comical, unrequited and often discreetly ribald love. Tickets are $4 gallery members; $6 general; $12 member families and $15 nonmember families. Call 235-2662 for more information.

School springs into sound

The Homer High School music department will perform their annual Spring Concert in the Mariner Theatre on Tuesday at 7 p.m. This concert will feature the concert choirs, swing choir, concert bands and stage bands. The Symphonic Band will perform Frances MacBeth's "Sailors and Whales," which is a five-movement composition depicting scenes from "Moby Dick." The music will be introduced by retiring English teacher, Catherine Rate, who will read several short passages out of the book. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and $10 for families. Senior citizens are free. Proceeds will supplement the school music department.

Poetry reading set

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Homer Bookstore will host a poetry reading with local authors Eva Saulitis and Tracy Philpot on Friday at 7 p.m. For more information, call 235-7496.

'Nunsense' auditions

Pier One Theatre will hold auditions for "Nunsense," a musical for five dancing nuns, today and tomorrow from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mariner Theatre. The play will be directed by Arthur Griffith, with musical direction by JulieAnn Smith. All materials for the audition will be provided, just bring your voice. The production will run the first three weekends in July. Scripts are available for 48-hour checkout at the Homer Public Library. For more information, call 235-7333.

Square dance at McNeil

There will be a square and contra dance on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at McNeil Canyon Elementary School. Laura Patty will call to music by Laura Light and Jeff Graham. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes to dance in. Beginners are welcome. A $6 admission will be charged.

Elks to show quilts

The 18th annual Kachemak Bay Quilt Show will be held at the Homer Elks Lodge from Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., to Sunday, May 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Quilts may be dropped off at Seams to Bee on Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or on Friday, May 10 before noon. Quilts may be picked up on Sunday, May 12 between 4:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. unless other arrangements are made. An entry fee of $1 per quilt will be charged. For more information, call 235-7023.
