Mariner boys drop opener to Grizzlies

Staff report

The Mariner boys soccer team dropped its first game of the season 5-0 at the Anchorage Football Stadium on Saturday against Grace Christian.

The Grizzly's John Weber scored twice and Paddy Ekstrom, Ryan Wirick and Reuben Seidl all added goals.

"We lost to a better team," said Homer Head Soccer Coach Warren Waldorf. "They were a little more fit, skilled and experienced."

Waldorf was pleased with the play of captain Aaron Lewis and sweeper Mark Walsworth and said Tyler Langham is a natural talent that showed improvement in his first game at goalkeeper.

The Mariners have six practices to prepare for the next game, which is against Kenai on April 29.

Waldorf said he hopes to get out of the gym and onto grass sometime this week and plans on shaking up the lineup to encourage more offense.

After the Kenai game, the Mariners travel to Nikiski, Houston and Wasilla on May 1-3.
