A reception to kick off the 2011 Shorebird Festival will be held 5-7 p.m. May 5 at center headquarters. The free family event will feature a presentation by Jennifer Aist, author of "Babes in the Woods," local food and door prizes. For more information, call 235-6667.

CACS offers a three-day course on Estuary Exploration in Kachemak Bay May 16-18 at the Kachemak Bay Wilderness Lodge. Guides will lead participants through activities like kayaking and photography and natural history subjects such as birds, mammals, geology and archaeology. Cost is $600.
