Common Space video portrait shows today

Washington, D.C., visiting artist Hasan Elahi has been in Homer this week to facilitate a community video portrait for the exploration of "History as Common Space." Part of the Alaska Design Forum's Common Space project, Elahi's project is one of five going on in Alaska this month. From noon-7 p.m. today at Bunnell Street Arts Center, the community video project is shown. Elahi presents an artist's talk and discussion at 6 p.m.

The Homer Community Video Project captures shared community history as Common Space and presents the information in an art installation. Elahi produced the installation using videos filmed by community volunteers. The project documents generations, trades and professions, and areas of town.

Elahi is an interdisciplinary artist whose work examines issues of surveillance, simulated time, transport systems, borders and frontiers. His work is frequently in the media and has been covered by The New York Times, Forbes, Wired, CNN, ABC, CBS, NPR, Al Jazeera, Fox, and has appeared on The Colbert Report. He is currently Associate Professor of Art at University of Maryland.
