Numbers are up from last year for Head Coach Bill Steyer and Homer High's track and field team. Twenty-two students have signed up for the season despite the fact that the team does not have a working track.

"I have had to really work hard to recruit and keep this team together," said Steyer. "I'm hoping more will come out for track and field once we have a track."

In lieu of a track, the team is practicing in the high school parking lot. The young team of mainly sophomores and freshman have been working on strength conditioning and fitness.

Steyer said he is excited to work with returning athletes such as sophomore Cassidy Soistman and senior Travis Smith, both of whom made it to State Championships last year.

The first meet of the season is set for this Friday and Saturday at the Dome in Anchorage.
