Linday Olsen, 2008 Homer High School graduate and student at Williams College, has been awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, one of 40 given out nationwide to college graduates of unusual promise, according to information provided on the fellowships website. The fellowship allows recipients a year of independent study and travel outside the United States. The subject of Olsens one-year fellowship is The International Fisherman: Cross-Cultural Themes of Global Fishing Communities.

Through the Alaska Community Foundation, the following scholarships are available: the David E. Knot Memorial Nursing Fellowship, deadline April 15; the Frank and Carol Pinkerton Orchestral String Instrument Scholarship, deadline May 1; the Jim Snead Memorial Scholarship, deadline is April 20; the Neal O. Thorpe Memorial Scholarship, applications accepted until May 31; Shelly Szepanski Memorial Flight Scholarship, deadline is June 15; see www.alaskaacf.org.

The Alaska State Fair is accepting applications for its scholarships. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. April 20. Visit www.alaskastatefair.org.

Deadline for the American Legion Auxiliary scholarships is today.

The Homer Foundation has applications for the Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship; Homer Community Science Scholarship; Health Care Providers Scholarship; Drew Scalzi Memorial Maritime Scholarship; Diane Wambach Shoot for the Stars Scholarship; Kachemak Bay Medical Clinic Scholarship; Beluga Tail / Tale Writing Scholarships. Applications may be requested via mail, phone, email, or picked up at the Homer Foundation or Homer High School counselors office or downloaded from the Foundations website at www.homerfund.org. The deadline for all applications is 4 p.m. April 19.
