Fans of Apple's iPhone will get two more choices of cell phone service on the lower Kenai Peninsula this month when Alaska Communications and GCI start offering the iPhone.

Through a deal with Apple, starting April 20, both wireless providers will carry the iPhone on their 3G networks. Previously, AT&T had been the only cell phone company offering the iPhone in Homer.

"Our customers have been asking for this for awhile," said Marla Thompson, Alaska Communications vice president of consumer sales and services. "We're just very excited to get through this process and have this partnership with Apple."

"We are pleased to offer iPhone for our customers throughout the state of Alaska," said Ron Duncan, GCI president and CEO. "We have invested over $2 billion to bring the latest communication technology to Alaska."

Both companies offer the iPhone 4S, the latest generation iPhone that includes Siri, the intelligent voice-responsive feature, faster computer processing chips and a high-resolution screen. Both companies sell the 16 gigabyte iPhone 4S for $150 with a 2-year contract and data plan. GCI also offers the iPhone 4 for $50 and the iPhone 3Gs for free, also with a 2-year contract.

Alaska Communications has a plan for $101 a month with nationwide unlimited talk, unlimited voice mail, unlimited text and 5,120 megabytes of data. GCI has a similar plan for $89.98 a month, but with 3,000 megabytes of data. Both companies offer the faster 3G network in the Homer area. Other plans with different data and talk plans are available with both companies.

Customers can transfer old cell phone numbers to service with both customers. Thompson said iPhones from other wireless providers can't be used on the Alaska Communications network. David Morris, a GCI spokesman, said iPhones unlocked by other wireless providers can be used.
