Nikiski resident Callen Jay Ross died suddenly on March 26, 2011, of a heart attack at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. He was 53.

A service "at sea" will be held at a later date.

Mr. Ross was born Nov. 15, 1957, and raised in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he lived for most of his life. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts at Miles College in Miles City, Mont. He received a degree in graphic design at Charter College, a degree in welding technology at the University of Alaska Anchorage, a degree in maritime studies at the Alaska Vocational Technical Center and attended Alaska Pacific University and University of Alaska Fairbanks. He resided in Alaska for the past 20 years. He received his captain's license and was continuing his education in Seward to further his abilities as a captain to be able to navigate larger and various kinds of ships. His close friends called him a "seeker of knowledge" and described him as a religious person and said religion was an important part of his life. Cal loved to ride motorcycles and was a lover and collector of music.

He was preceded in death by his mother, LaWanda Ross of Coeur d'Alene.

He is survived by his daughters, Shaleah Meyer of Post Falls, Idaho, and Caitlin Ross of Chugach; his father, Jack H. Ross of Coeur d'Alene; sisters, Marla Ross of Coeur d'Alene and Verona Ross of Menlo Park, Calif.; and a brother, Bennett Ross of Liberty Lake, Wash.
