U.S. Army Pfc. Julie M. Johnston graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. She is a 1998 graduate of Homer High School.

Valisa Higman of Seldovia was listed to the dean's list at Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Ore., for earning at least a 3.75 grade point average. She is a senior majoring in psychology.

The Kenai Peninsula United Way seeks volunteers to serve on its Allocations Review Committee. Volunteers are needed for a full-day commitment on Thursday, May 2. Lunch will be provided. Call Evy Gebhardt at (907) 283-9500.

IRS trained volunteers with the American Association of Retired Persons offer free income-tax help for seniors and low- to middle-income families through April 15. Returns are filed electronically at no cost. To make an appointment call the Homer Senior Center at 235-7655.
