Studies produce winning bridges

Homer Middle School student Filip Reutov displays his winnind bridge design.

Putting to work everything they learned during a recent unit on physics, Homer Middle School eighth-grade students designed and constructed bridges from toothpicks, with the bridges competing to see which could bear the most weight and which had a high efficiency rating, load compared with the bridge weight. The winners in the two categories were:

Load

• First place: Filip Reutov, 104.4 pounds;

• Second place: Clem Tillion, 104.1 pounds;

• Third place: Owen Delehanty, 72.6 pounds;

• Fourth place: Maggie LaRue, 71.3 pounds;

• Fifth place: Taurey Bowden, 69.5 pounds.

Efficiency

• First place: Filip Reutov, 5.019;

• Second place: Clem Tillion, 4.098;

• Third place: Cameron Corbell, 3.455;

• Fourth place: Khadicha Mukambetova, 2.991;

• Fifth place: Axel Gillam, 2.937.
