May Marie Benson

June 14, 1915- March 22, 2011

May Marie Benson

May Marie Benson, 95, died at her home in Homer after a long illness. A memorial service to celebrate May Marie's long life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the Quarter Deck Room at Land's End.

May Marie was born in Duluth, Minn., and lived most of her life in Minnesota and Wisconsin before moving to Homer in 1995 to live next door to one of her daughters, Poppy Benson. Before her marriage, May Marie worked in an office where she became part of a group of life-long friends known as "the girls." She married Orval Benson in Minneapolis in 1944, and became a full-time homemaker raising their two daughters. When her daughters were older, May Marie started working for the Citizens' League, a non-profit group dedicated to informed citizenship. This cause-oriented work appealed to May's intellectual side. When her youngest daughter started college, May restarted her own college career with night classes. She graduated in 1982, at the age of 67, with a Bachelor of Elected Studies from the University of Minnesota. She had a life-long love of reading and participated in numerous Elderhostel courses and wrote poetry after her retirement. She also loved to travel and planned annual family trips to the nation's great parks and monuments.

She enjoyed Homer for the spectacular view from her house, the mild weather compared to Minnesota and daily contact with her daughter and family. She was a regular at Friendship Center during her 16 years in Homer and had many wonderful caregivers who made it possible for her to live out her life in her own home.

Her husband, Orval Benson, preceded her in death in 1992.

May Marie is survived by her daughter, Poppy Benson; son-in-law, Frank Cloyd; and grandson, Cedar Cloyd, all of Homer; her daughter, Marla Ordway; son-in-law, John Ordway; and grandsons, Erik and Dan Ordway, all of Minnesota; her sister, Betty Floyd; and Betty's husband, Dave Floyd, of Virginia; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
