Alpacas help raise funds for hockey

The third annual Alpaca Dung Pile Challenge was a resounding success, with a fun-filled and sunny evening making the event deck-friendly and truly enjoyable.

Homer Broomball League players organize and participate in this fundraiser which benefits the Homer Hockey Association and all users of Kevin Bell Ice Arena.

Shortly before the two hour allotted time ran out the poop landed in Jenny Roth and Jason Boyd's squares, and each received $750.

Many individuals supported this event, with the bulk of the effort coming from Brandon Grochow and Seanna Gunn. Of course, an alpaca challenge would be nothing if the alpacas didn't join in thank you to Greg Simpson and everyone at the Anchor River Llama and Alpaca Ranch. The Down East Saloon is a great spot to enjoy the activities, especially when accompanied by Holy Santos Gang tunes.

A high-stakes silent auction saw fast and furious back and forth bidding. Thanks to Homer's Jeans, Steller Air, North Country Charters, the Salty Dawg, Bodywork For Your Being, The Honda Shop, NAPA, Spitfire Kennels, Ring of Fire Meadery, Homer Veterinary Clinic, Homer Bookstore, Damselfly, The Fringe, Homer Brewery, Kachemak Bowl, Homer Hounds, Art Shop Gallery, Hanna Johnson, Lila Little and Cycle Logical for the generously donated items.

There is one last chance to catch some broomball this season. Saturday and Sunday Homer welcomes teams from Bethel and Anchorage for the fourth Alaska State Broomball Tournament. We'll see you on the ice.
