Sign up for West Homer Elementary School's new baseball and softball program is open. Third and fourth grade sessions will be on Mondays and Thursdays starting April 4; fifth and sixth sessions are on Tuesdays and Fridays starting April 5. For more information, call 235-5750.

Homer Head Start is accepting applications for 3-5 year olds for the 2011-2012 year. All welcome. Center-based and home-based programs. Call 235-4322.

The 2011 Homer Bed and Breakfast Association Season Kickoff will be held April 10 at the Homestead Restaurant. It begins with networking at 1 p.m. (you may start setting up at 12:30 p.m.) and formal introductions at 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for most creative introduction. Homer Friends of the Homer Library seek nominations for both adult and youth (ages 13-19) Lifelong Learner Awards. Nominees may be from Ninilchik south and around Kachemak Bay. A nomination of no more than 500 words is required, and forms can be found at the circulation desk at the library or online at www.friendshomerlibrary.org. The nomination deadline is Saturday. The award winner will be honored at the Celebration of Lifelong Learning fundraiser at 7 p.m. on April 9. Tickets are $25 and Clem Tillion will be the keynote speaker. Kachemak Bay Equestrian Association announces the Fourth Annual Cowboy Cabaret. The fundraiser for Cottonwood Horse Park will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Alice's Champagne Palace and will include a chuck wagon dinner, dessert auction, poetry readings, music and a silent auction. Limited reserved tables are available by calling Jackie at 235-0192. To sign up to read a poem, call Tim at 299-2780. Tickets are $25, available at the Homer Bookstore or at the door.

Alaska Marine Safety Education Association offers a 10-hour fishing vessel safety and drill conductor course at Alaska vocational Technical Center in Seward on April 12. This hands-on course meets the training requirements for commercial fishing vessels and is free for commercial fishermen. The 19th Annual Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, themed Wild Birds, Wild Places and featuring keynote speaker Carl Safina, will be May 5-8. Complete festival details, are available at www.homeralaska.org, at the Homer Chamber of Commerce and the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center.
