Daniel Folmar pedals his fat bike on KNSC and Snowmads trails Saturday for the Epic 100 utra race.

Twenty-four hardy athletes competed in the first Homer Epic race on Saturday. Fat-tire bikers, skiers, and runners completed the 100K race from McNeil Canyon, Bald Mountain and Caribou Hills.

"One of our goals with this event was to bring different sports together and get the community working together," said event director Kathy Sarns. "And we want to see that grow."

The Kachemak Nordic Ski Club worked closely with Snomads snowmachine group to put on the Epic. Snowmachine trails were used for the event.

"There were snowmachiners cheering on racers which was awesome to see," said Sarns.

The popularity of ultra races on snow has increased. The two other ultra races in the state, the Susitna 100 and White Mountain 100, offer only a limited number of openings which fill up quickly, said Sarns.

"The Homer Epic 100 is unique because the terrain is much more difficult. There is about a one-mile elevation gain in total on this course," said Sarns. "And the views are spectacular which you don't get at many of those other ultra races."

Sarns and fellow event coordinator Megan Spurkland did not decide to put on the race for sure until March 1, and with only three weeks to organize, the positive feedback this weekend was encouraging.

Sarns said, "We are so excited for the reception of it that we see a future of ultra racing here in Homer."
