Charles Ray Pop Pop Hart Jr, 55, passed away March 14, 2012, at home surrounded by his family in Anchorage .

A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Spenard Recreational Center, 2020 W 48th Avenue, Anchorage. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

Charles was born Aug. 4, 1956, in Tacoma, Wash., to Charles R. Hart Sr. and Joanne J. (Dodge) Hart. He graduated from Dimond High School in 1975 and Cordon Bleu School of Cookery-London in 1977. He also attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Nagoya Gakvin University, Kansai Gaidai University and the University of Alaska Anchorage. Over the years, Charles made his home throughout Alaska in Homer, Fairbanks, Seward and Spenard. He was employed with Borders Books & Music and Best Buy. He also was a Japanese tutor for students of all ages.

He was an active member of the Metropolitan Community Church in Anchorage until May, 2011. His favorite pastimes were cooking amazing food for family and friends, and traveling the world, most recently to Italy and Japan (his home away from home). He received the Fur Rondy Aquarium Award in the 1970s. He was a local election official, and volunteered at the Seward SeaLife Center and with Identity Inc., Pride and the 4As. He absolutely loved being a grandpa and made it clear that he wanted more grandchildren. Like his father, Charles never met a stranger, his family said.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Sara (David) Risi, Anchorage; and Rebecca (Caleb) Larson, Aviano AFB, Italy; son, Charles Chaz Hart, Anchorage; grandson, Hatcher Larson, Aviano AFB, Italy; his ex-wife, Kristine (Pierson) Hart; mother, Joanne Hart; brother, Jeffrey Hart; sister, Susan Suzie Case, all of Anchorage; numerous nieces and nephews in Alaska; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in the Lower 48.

He is preceded in death by his father, Charles R. Hart Sr.; his father-in-law, Robert C. Pierson, and sister-in-law, Marcia Pierson.
