The Alaska State Employees Association/Kachemak Bay Chapter is offering a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from the Kachemak Bay area, south of Ninilchik. This scholarship is available to a senior wanting to further his or her education at an accredited college, university or technical school. Application deadline is April 1. Applications for the American Legion Auxiliary Scholarships for high school seniors can be found at school counselor offices or by contacting the American Legion at 235-8864 or Darlene at 235-6789. The scholarships include: the Homer American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 Scholarship, a local award of $500. Applicants do not need to be related to a veteran or a member of the American Legion family. Several scholarships will be awarded. Application deadline is April 12.

The USCGC Hickory is offering a $1,000 scholarship essay contest to graduating students in the Homer area. The essay is to explain the importance of lifelong community service and how the writer's strengths and weaknesses affect the organization(s) with which they volunteer. The scholarship may be used at any accredited two-year, four-year or trade school within the United States to help defray educational cost for the first year of schooling. The scholarship money will be forwarded to the college, university or trade school of the winner's choice in the winner's name upon receipt of a copy of the winner's confirmed admission to their chosen school.

The Homer Foundation manages permanently endowed scholarship funds that provide annual awards to area students for a variety of education endeavors. The following are currently available: Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship for foreign language study and travel; Homer Community Science Scholarship supporting post-secondary education in the life sciences; Health Care Providers Scholarship supporting students serious in pursuing a health care field; Drew Scalzi Memorial Maritime Scholarship supporting students of fishing families and/or students wishing to pursue a career in Alaska's maritime industry; Diane Wambach "Shoot for the Stars" Scholarship supporting education and training for young people with a plan to pursue their dream; Kachemak Bay Medical Clinic Scholarship supporting students with outstanding academic achievements and a strong work ethic; Beluga Tail-Tale Writing Scholarships that provide awards in both creative and nonfiction writing; A.W. "Bill" Johnson Teacher Education Scholarship to support students choosing teaching as a career. Applications are available and may be requested via mail, phone, e-mail, picked up at the Homer High School counselor's office or downloaded from the foundation's web site at www.homerfund.org. Kenai Borough Employees Association scholarship committee is currently accepting applications for four scholarships of $500 each. The scholarships are available to all 2011 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, including public, private and home schools. Applications and instructions are available from any Kenai Peninsula Borough high school counselor's office or on the borough's website, www.borough.kenai.ak.us. Applications must be delivered or postmarked by March 31. They can be mailed or dropped off at the Kenai Peninsula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 N. Binkley St., Soldotna, AK 99669.
