Matthew Eugene Janusiewicz

Lifelong Alaskan Matthew Eugene Janusiewicz, 57, died March 13, 2011, after battling lung cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones, including his father, all seven of his siblings, spouses, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends at the home of Chris Adams and Cecila Akerman in Homer.

A celebration of life, potluck and bonfire will be held at his good friend Manny Ramirez's home, 41155 Char Court, Homer, at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011. He will be buried at sea.

Matt was born at Elmendorf Air Force Base on April 3, 1953, to Eugene and Elizabeth Janusiewicz, the second of eight children. He spent his early years living in Ohio, Alaska, New York and Wisconsin. He grew up in Anchorage, attending Rabbit Creek Elementary, Catholic Junior High, Dimond and East High Schools. He graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1971. His adult life took him to Arizona for a short period, Fairbanks and Homer.

Matt's family said, "He was a carpenter by trade. Health reasons had kept him from working in the trade for the past few years. He did, however, put his carpentry skills to work by working on neighborhood projects, such as building decks and greenhouses. Matt loved to cook and bake; he made awesome cinnamon rolls and all kinds of other goodies. Matt loved being out on the water, fishing, and also enjoyed hunting and shooting. Last summer his main mode of transportation was a motor bike. He thoroughly enjoyed his time. His nieces and nephews affectionately called him 'Mean Uncle Matt.' Matt will be remembered for his willingness to help others. He had a big heart and will be missed by his many friends and family."

He is preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Janusiewicz. He is survived by his father, Gene Janusiewicz; brothers, Bill and wife Christie Janusiewicz, Rob and wife Patti Janusiewicz, and Mike Janusiewicz of Anchorage; sisters, Kathy and husband Wolfgang Steinborn of Anchorage, Terry and husband Martin Dickey of Wasilla, Barb Janusiewicz and Bret Johnson of Sultan, Wash., and Birdy and husband Eric Thompson of Eagle River; many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and great nephews.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
