Students named for state geography bee

Sixth-grader Jaron Morris and eighth-grader Aurora Waclawski are headed to the State Geographic Bee at the Egan Center in Anchorage on March 30.

Jaron is the son of Cate and Jamin Morris and a student at McNeil Canyon Elementary School. Aurora is the daughter of Doug and Michelle Waclawski and a student at Homer Middle School.

The students have been officially notified by the National Geographic Society that they are semifinalists eligible for the state competition.

Sponsoring the competition are Goggle and Plum Creek, the largest and most geographically diverse private landowner in the nation, according to a press release from the National Geographic Bee.

The winner of the state geographic bee will receive $100, the "Complete National Geographic on DVD" and a trip to Washington, D.C., where the winner will represent Alaska in the national finals held at National Geographic Society headquarters on May 22-24.

The first-place winner in the national event receives a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the society, as well as travel with a parent or guardian, all expenses paid, to the Galapagos Islands.
