Nikolaevsk girls basketball team has good run at state tourney

By Angelina Skowronski

Nikolaevsk's Lady Warriors battled fiercely in the 2A girls basketball State Championship games in Anchorage this week. They made it all the way to a fight for third place against Klawok, losing to the team from Southeast 35-56 in a game held at the Sullivan Arena at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The young team of six eight-graders, one freshman and two sophomores came together under Head Coach Bea Klaich to make it to state.

"We had the goal at the beginning of the season to win some games. Once we achieved that goal, we had the goal to play at state," said Klaich. "The girls are enthusiastic and have great mental attitudes."

The Warriors won the opening game against Tok on Monday 66-43. They went on to play tough team Point Hope on Tuesday for the semi-finals, losing 57-26.

Klaich said about the Point Hope game, "it was a real tough game, they are a seasoned team. The girls worked hard and never gave up."

Results for Wednesday's championship and fourth-place games were not available by press time.
