Seldovia girls going to state

The Seldovia Susan B. English School girls basketball team is on its way to state after taking second in the 2A basketball tournament at Bristol Bay School last week. The team defeated Nikolaevsk and Ninilchik before losing to Cook Inlet Academy in the championship game.

"We were the No. 2 seed going in and we did what we were supposed to do," said Seldovia Coach Buck Brown.

"It was a great tournament."

The seven-girl squad faces Yakutat in their first game of the state tournament in Anchorage Monday. Also competing in the 2A girls tournament are Chevak, Walter Northway, Togiak, Cook Inlet, Skagway and Tikigaq.

Nikolaevsk girls were seeded No. 3 and won their first game against Lumen Christi. They went on to lose two close games to Seldovia and Ninilchik.

Ninilchik girls took third in the tournament, but won't go to state because there are only two berths in the 2A conference.

Jim Dube, principal and athletic director at Bristol Bay School, said the efforts of volunteers and the gracious attitudes of participants made the tournament a great success.

"It's probably the smoothest-running tournament we've had here," Dube said.

In the boys' tournament, Lumen Christi took first, Bristol Bay second and C.I.A. third.

They will face Klawock, Buckland, Tri-Valley, Scammon Bay, Hydaburg and Tikigaq next week.
