Homer airport awarded grant

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $300,000 to Homer Airport for improving the snow removal equipment building and extending its life expectancy, according to a press release issued Friday.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough was awarded $49,272 from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement for the purpose of removing river debris from fish spawning areas.

Business startup workshop set for March 18

The Alaska Small Business Development Center plans three workshops later this month.

The center will offer a "Starting Your Own Business" workshop from 11 a.m.-noon March 18 at the Homer Chamber of Commerce. Cost is $20.

Bryan Zak will answer basic questions on starting a business on the Kenai Peninsula while preparing participants for a productive relationship with Alaska Small Business Development Center. The workshop will provide information about AKSBDC and its partner programs and explain the benefits of registering for free counseling services.

There will be a free renewable energy workshop from 1-4 p.m. March 21 also at the chamber.

Alaskan Wind Industries is working around the state to provide reliable solutions to Alaska's unique energy needs. Among the topics to be covered: wind turbine — direct heating options; small wind — diesel; and proper wind turbine siting. The Business Grants and Incentives section will provide information about installing wind turbines and receiving the largest benefit from these units, as well as review the return on investment and new incentives for 2011.

A "Marketing Your Business Workshop" will be offered from 1-4 p.m. March 28, also at the chamber. Cost is $35. Bryan Zak will present creative and inexpensive marketing techniques.
