The Mariners traveled to Wasilla for the Region III Northern Lights Conference tournament last weekend. Both boys and girls teams came in fifth place.

Wasilla took first place in the tournament for both boys and girls teams.

"Both teams played great. We were a little short handed, but the kids that went played wonderfully," said Head Coach Mark Casseri.

The teams were several players short due to behavioral issues that the school addressed, according to Casseri.

The boys team, entering the tournament seeded No. 2 in the conference, played No. 3 Kodiak and No. 4 Skyview, losing the games 71-48 and 47-41 respectively.

Against the Bears, the Mariners started strong, ending the first half ahead 31-25. Kodiak came down on Homer hard in the second, gaining 23 points to win the game.

Sam Reinert was the top scorer in that game with 16 points, followed by Robin Glosser with nine, and Quin Daugherty with seven.

Against the Panthers, the Mariners struggled in the beginning of the game, but regained speed in the second half. In the last quarter Homer outscored Skyview 12-9, yet still fell short for a tie by six points.

"We needed the ball at the end of the game, and unfortunately we had never practiced the play that we needed," said Casseri. "That was a fault of the coaches and something we would have done differently."

Lady Ms fall to Kodiak, Palmer

The girls team also fell short in both their games, losing 53-16 to Kodiak and 66-23 to Palmer.

Top scorers in those games were Haley Oliver and Elissa Tutt with eight points each cumulatively, and Mariah Turner and Maggie Koplin with five points each cumulatively.

"The girls gave us everything they could and responded well to our coaching," said Casseri.

The NLC tournament ends Homer basketball for the season with a new season on the horizon.

"We are going to miss the seniors and the hard work and leadership they put forth. Next year the younger kids will have the opportunity to step up," Casseri said.
