AVO monitoring Iliamna

Scientists with the Alaska Volcano Observatory plan more observations of Iliamna Volcano following episodes of increased earthquake activity the past three months on the volcano across Cook Inlet from Homer. According to a news release on Wednesday, Iliamna is showing earthquake activity similar to activity from September 1996 to February 1997. Iliamna did not erupt then. Earthquake activity is going on now, with numerous small quakes. AVO scientists plan airborne gas sampling to better understand the recent activity. Iliamna remains at volcano alert level normal and aviation code green.
