Friday night, Palmer escaped with a close 58-51 win over the Mariners. Saturday night, Homer was turned back by the Knights 71-66.

“It was good to see Colony and Palmer both, to be able to think about what needs to be done,” said Homer Coach Tim Daugharty. “We’ve got the region tournament coming up.”

Before the region tournament, there’s a trip to Kodiak for games Friday and Saturday to close the regular season. Homer (9-12, 4-5 NLC) is expected to be a contender for one of three berths to the state tournament from the region event, which will be contested at Kenai Central.

“This region tournament is going to be something,” Daugharty said. “It’s going to be a fabulous set of games. It’s kind of a wide open region.”

In Friday’s outcome, junior Allison Horazdovsky scored 14 points for the Mariners. Senior Rachel Bornheimer and junior Claire Siekaniec added 12 points each and junior Reba Temple scored 10.

Palmer was led by Kelsey Campbell with 12 points. Ashley Swetzof and Stephanie Houser each scored 10 points.

“Palmer has a good team, they’re big and aggressive,” Daugharty said. “They’re strong girls, that’s for sure. So it was a physical game.

“Palmer has one of the better teams. It goes back to being able to see what everybody has and then adjust at tournament time.”

In Saturday’s game, Colony converted 23 of 30 foul shots while Homer missed 15 of its 36. The Mariners only trailed by one entering the final period.

Horazdovsky led the hosts with 19 points. Bornheimer added 15 points and Temple 13 points.

“They got to the line a lot more than we did, and they were good free throw shooters,” Daugharty said. “Reba worked hard, and Allison played really good. She got a lot of assists and some nice rebounds. She’s really improving right now.

“It was up tempo the whole time. Both teams were fatigued, because of the games the night before. The defensive pressure wasn’t as good as it could have been.”
