Land's End Acquisition Corp. has started construction of a new $1.5 million, 24-room addition at Land's End Resort to replace the old 16-room Starboard Wing.

Steiner's Northstar Construction started foundation work last month, said Rick Scott, director of sales and marketing for Land's End.

The old unit was moved across the parking lot and will be hauled by barge in early spring to become a hotel unit at Kenai Landing, said Scott. Kenai Landing is the renovation of the historical Ward's Cove Cannery that includes a hotel, restaurant, shops and a boat launch. Land's End principal owner Jon Faulkner is a partner in Kenai Landing with Steve Agni of Anchorage.

Located at the west end of the Homer Spit resort, the new Starboard Wing will increase to 84 the number of hotel rooms available at Land's End. Land's End also manages the booking for the Land's End Lodges, privately owned two- and three-bedroom luxury condominiums. A third Land's End Lodges building with three more condominiums is under construction.

Steiner's Northstar Construction is also building that unit. Todd Steiner said two of the condominiums are nearing the finish phase. A third unit is almost closed in. Subcontracting work was done by Woodworth Electric, Eayrs Plumbing and Heating, Homer Roofing and Mark's Drywall — all Homer companies — and Accel Fire Systems of Anchorage.

Rooms in the new hotel wing have two bedrooms with at least three beds. Six rooms are deluxe suites with hide-a-beds for extra guests. Each room has a Kachemak Bay view, private decks, bay windows, two phones, four work spaces for business travelers, a refrigerator and two televisions, said Scott.

"Times are changing and our customers are demanding more amenities and space — more privacy for families and groups planning extended stays, and more of the conveniences of home," said Dawn Schneider, general manager of Land's End.

The new addition is scheduled to open in June 2005.
