The Homer Middle School Huskies wrapped up their schedule with a stellar performance at the borough tourney last weekend. All 11 wrestlers placed in the top five of their weight divisions. Seventh grader Jaime Rios beat Paxson Berry of Seward in overtime to advance to the finals. There he battled returning borough champion from Soldotna, Jesse Littrell. Rios did not go down lightly in the final match. He had Littrell on his back in the second period and was down only 7-4 before Littrell got off his back and pinned Rios in the third period. Elias Graham pinned Zane Bush from Soldotna in a head and arm to advance to the finals. In the finals, Graham went head to head with Nathan Carstens. Graham frustrated Carstens for most of the match, in the end Carstens had more experience and won 10-0. Jadzia Martin suffered her only loss of the season to Atom Skiba of Soldotna who she beat in Nikiski a few weeks ago. Martin, Jared Gee, and Rios all lead the team with seven wins this season. Gee's semifinal match with Zach Kozickowski of Kenai was epic. The match stopped mutilple times for bloody noses, pokes to the eyes, and injured ribs. The match was close until Kozickowski caught Gee on his back to win the match. The Huskies roll into the Popeye season starting Monday, Feb 20. Those interested can show up for practices at the Homer Middle School on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5pm-6:30pm, and at the Homer High School mat room on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-5pm.
