Homer Winter Carnival sparkles in sunshine

The sun, area residents and out-of-town guests were out in force for the 2011 Homer Chamber of Commerce Winter Carnival's weekend of fun. Sandwiched between three days of events was the parade, sponsored by Alaska USA Federal Credit Union. Janna Davis of Alaska USA rounded up a team of judges — including herself and Jacquie Thaute, Jenny Martin and Kimberly Glaspell — and awarded prizes to entries in the stream of entertainment that stretched from the Homer High School parking lot to the west end of Pioneer Avenue. From a judges' reviewing stand provided by Bay Realty, emcee Arden Jeffries introduced each entry.

Receiving awards were:

First place nonprofit: Krewe of Gambrinus

Second place nonprofit: Head Start

First place family/individual: Mark Marette

First place for profit: Homer News

Judges' choice: Brownie Troop 584

Leading the parade was an honor guard provided by American Legion Post 16.

In addition to parade participants, a crew of volunteers made the event a success in spite of cold temperatures and a freezing wind.

"The Homer Chamber of Commerce would like to extend a warm thank you to all the amazing volunteers and public servants who helped make the 2011 Winter Carnival parade a success," said Nyla Lightcap, visitor center manager, adding, "Thank you to the public for coming out on a cold winter day to enjoy the parade."
