Homer artist Gary Lyon won the Omm Award in the U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Competition, held Feb. 6 in Lake Geneva, Wis. The Omm Award is given annually to snow sculpture artists who represent the art form in a positive way.

Lyon's team, The Three Dudes, also placed third in the national competition. With teammates Gary Keeton and Les Babcock, both of Anchorage, The Three Dudes won the City of Lake Geneva Award for their sculpture, "Dance of the Axcagun," a piece inspired by the Tlingit legend of the raven as Creator.

The Three Dudes won the chance to represent Alaska by tying for first place last year at the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous snow sculpture competition. Thanks to a snowfall of 20 inches and below-zero temperatures, the snow was ideal for carving, Lyon said.

The Three Dudes previously placed first in the U.S. Nationals in 2002 and second in 2003.
