Pond hockey comes to Beluga Lake

Staff Report

The Homer Hockey Association has announced its first Pond Hockey Tournament scheduled to take place on Beluga Lake on Saturday and Sunday, with the games beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Approximately 50 players from Kenai, Kodiak, Anchorage and Homer will demonstrate their talent and sportsmanship as they compete in this outdoor tournament. There will be no Zamboni, no penalty box; this is hockey like it was meant to be, said tournament organizers.

The tournament kicks off with a meet-and-greet happy hour followed by a showing of the documentary "Pond Hockey" at Beluga Lake Lodge from 6-8 p.m. Friday. All teams and fans are invited.

The weekend activity also serves as a fundraising opportunity for the Kevin Bell Ice Arena, including a "Hockey Quiz Night" and after-party for teams and fans at Beluga Lake Lodge from 7 p.m.-midnight on Saturday. Proceeds help with rink maintenance costs, scholarships andreducing costs for ice time.
