The deadline to nominate Kenai Peninsula area school teachers for the BP Teacher of Excellence award is Monday. The program recognizes Alaska educators for their dedication to teaching and inspiring students. Each Teacher of Excellence will receive a $500 gift card and one teacher will be chosen as the Kenai Peninsula BP Teacher of the Year. That teacher will receive a $1,500 scholarship for continuing education. This year, each of the recognized teachers' schools or PTA also will be awarded $500. Applications for the American Legion Auxiliary Scholarships for high school seniors can be found at school counselor offices or by contacting the American Legion at 235-8864 or Darlene at 235-6789. The scholarships include: National President Scholarship, with local, state and national awards. Applicants must be related to a veteran who served in the armed forces, from a daughter or son through step great-grandchildren. Application deadline is March 1. Homer American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 Scholarship, a local award of $500. Applicants do not need to be related to a veteran or a member of the American Legion family. Several scholarships will be awarded. Application deadline is April 12. Scholarship for Junior Auxiliary members. Application deadline is March 1. Call for more information. Scholarships also are offered for non-traditional students who have been out of school for a few years and want to improve their skills or students who are in college and need additional financial support to obtain their degree. Western District Scholarship. Local and Western District awards are made from $500-$1,000. Applicants must be a current member of the American Legion, auxiliary or Sons of the American Legion.
