James William Cooper

July 19, 1949- Jan. 29, 2011

Longtime Alaskan and Homer resident, Mr. James William Cooper, 61, died Jan. 29, 2011, at home with his family by his side.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 5, 2011, at The Homer Elks Lodge.

Mr. Cooper was born July 19, 1949, to Donald and Mary Ann (Cavalli) Cooper in Blaine, Wash. He moved to Alaska in 1973 and lived in Valdez, Copper Center and Anchorage before moving to Homer. Jim worked as a journeyman lineman in Valdez and Homer. He was a safety director for Chugach Electric and Homer Electric and also served as the business representative for IBEW in Anchorage. Jim retired from Homer Electric 3 years ago. He loved fishing, hunting and camping.

His family wrote, "Jim loved spending time with his grandkids and tinkering in his garage. Weekends were spent entertaining friends and family around the backyard bonfire. His favorite place to be was on the waters of Kachemak Bay. Many visitors started thinking of the Cooper residence as their Homer home after being a weekend guest. Those that knew 'Coop' best describe him as 'larger than life.'"

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his newborn son in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Kelly Cooper of Homer; sons, Leo Cooper of Homer and Justin Cooper of Kent, Wash; daughters, Veronica Cooper of Cheyenne, Wyo., Carla Hurn of Anchorage, Julie Kramme of Blaine, Wash. and Christy Imperio of Blaine, Wash.; sister, Joanne Cooper of Blaine, Wash.; seven grandchildren; mothers-in-law and father in-laws, and multiple sisters-in-law and brothers in-law.
