Troopers bust major pot grow

Alaska State Troopers last Friday seized almost 500 marijuana plants from two Ninilchik homes. Charged are Kirk Turner, 54; Christopher Norman, 31, both with four counts each of fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance; and Scott Hume, 48, with eight counts of fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance. All are from Ninilchik.

Troopers first suspected the marijuana grow after Ninilchik Trooper Aaron Mobley got tips from citizens about the operation. When troopers approached a Marion Street home Hume said he rented from Norman and Turner, weather conditions were such they could smell growing marijuana. Norman and Turner said they also were involved in the grow, troopers alleged in charging documents. Troopers arrested the men at the scene and then got search warrants for the Marion Street home and a nearby home on Pioneer Street also suspected to be involved.

Troopers estimated the processed weight of the plants was 20.5 pounds with a street value of $150,000.
