Homer Husky named Outstanding Wrestler

By Chris Perk

The Homer Middle School wrestling team traveled to Nikiski last weekend to wrestle in an all-borough tournament.

Although only six members made the trip, all of them placed in the top four of their weight classes, and five of them made it into the finals.

Eighth-grader Jadzia Martin, wrestling in the combined 90- and 95-pound weight class won all three of her matches in route to a first-place finish. Her efforts were rewarded with the Outstanding Wrestler title given to her by the officials of the tournament.

She used a quality double leg to win her first match, and then was able to score points using a cross face butcher and cradle to win her final matches. Martin was the only girl to make the finals of the tournament which featured five other females in different weight divisions.

Four runner-up performances were logged by Jared Brandt at 100 pounds, Jaime Rios at 105 pounds, Elias Graham at 115 pounds and Jared Gee at 285 pounds.

Rios and Gee lost to the same opponents like last weekend in the finals, but they are showing consistency. Gee scored a takedown on Abe Bartlett from Kenai before his momentum took Gee to his back. Taking Bartlett down was a big confident booster for Gee. Rios won two matches and looked dominant until his finals loss to Littrell from Soldotna.

Brandt and Graham both won close matches to advance to the finals. Brandt upset the No. 2 seeded Paxson Berry from Seward 6-4. He then lost to Paul Steffenson, the No. 1 seed from Kenai.

Graham held on to beat with No. 2 seed from Ninilchik, Peter Jenke, 7-6. Graham scored a takedown with 15 seconds left and was able to ride Jenke out for the victory. In the finals, Graham lost to Nathan Carstens again, but almost finished the match and made big improvements from last weekend.

Andrew Doughty at 145 pounds, placed fourth for the weekend. He wrestled very tough and did not get pinned in his losses.

The Huskies will travel to Chapman on Saturday.
