Hockey-playing divas took over Homer's Kevin Bell Arena for the Women's Winter Jamboree last weekend.

Women from Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer, Kenai and Soldotna arrived to Homer as strangers, but were soon forced into friendships as the six teams of the tournament were created with a mixture of the different groups.

"We mixed everyone up into six different teams so they could play with a group of women they haven't played with before," said event organizer Ingrid Harrald.

Each of the six teams, with self-chosen names, played four games throughout the weekend. Team 6 — "We like to Shoot it Shoot it," sponsored by the Grog Shop — and Team 4 — "Defense is a Girl's Best Friend," sponsored by Beluga Lake Lodge — played the championship game, with a 3-1-0 record and a 3-1 record respectively.

All 80-plus women of the jamboree gathered at the arena to watch WLTSISI beat DIAGBF 4-2.

In the first minutes of the game, DIAGBF took a quick lead with a breakaway goal by Kristen Brown of Homer. Brook Ames' goal put the WLTSISI on the scoreboard later in the period. WLTSISI continued the scoring streak with goals made by Danelle Winn, and Barb Malchick, both of Anchorage, and Deb Mosely of Homer.

The DIAGBF rallied another goal by Jessi Dullinger of Homer in the last period, but were unable to even the score.

Team "We like to Shoot it Shoot it" took home the trophy at the Winter Jamboree. The first place team was composed of Jessie Cashman, Karyn Noyes, Saundra Hudson, and Deb Mosely, all of Homer; Shonia Werner from Kenai; and Kathy Coon, Danelle Winn, Anna Stephanich, and Barb Malchick all of Anchorage.
