Helene Hope Morawitz

June 6, 1924 - Jan. 12, 2012

Helene Hope Morawitz was born June 6, 1924, and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She moved to Homer with her husband, Joe Morawitz, in the spring of 1948, where she lived and called home, until she passed away from natural causes on Jan. 12, 2012, at the age of 87.

Helene is survived by her four children, Millie Lewis, Mike Morawitz, Steve Morawitz and Rebecca Tucker; along with 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Helene was actively involved in her community, serving as an American Legion Auxiliary member, a longtime Pioneer, and dedicated volunteer at the Homer Community Food Pantry. During the mid 1960s Helene was instrumental in starting the first successful salt water sea life aquarium in Homer. She had a variety of hobbies, including gardening, quilting, Russian embroidery, sewing and many other arts and crafts. Helene loved working outside in the yard taking great care of her flower gardens, large lilacs and an array of many other trees.

"Helene touched the lives of people of all ages over the many years in Homer; a little help here, a little help there and a 'come on in, the door is open' greeting for all. She was a strong, salt-of-the-earth woman; tough as nails, who possessed a large heart of gold, and a warm, never-ending smile. She will be truly missed," wrote her family.
