Best Western still on top

The Best Western Riptide remains the top seed in City League basketball action with a 54-33 win over the Bulletproof Nets on Monday. Dan Miotke led the game with 18 points, followed by Dean Devaney's 15. Corey Sutherland scored 13 for the Nets and Edan Badajos added 11 with his effort. The Home Run Oil Titans squeezed out a 52-49 victory against the Gregoire Construction Smooth Operators. Keith Edens scored 16 and Joel Tutt pitched in 12 points for the victors while Heath Johnson and Dave Drake each had 9 points for the Smooth Ops. The K-12 Teachers cruised to a 57-27 win over the Alaska Bible Institute as Mark Putney led all scorers with 16; Paul Story also had 12 for the teachers. ABI's Michael Ross had 9 points. Stephan Reigns also had 7. Games continue every Monday beginning at 6 p.m. at the Homer Middle School. Community School's public pickup games also are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. at Homer High School.

Hockey jamboree this weekend

The Homer Hockey Association and the Homer Divas Women's Hockey announce the third annual Winter Jamboree hockey tournament scheduled to take place Friday through Sunday at the Kevin Bell Arena. More than 80 women from across the state will compete in the 15-game tournament. Hockey players from Kodiak, Juneau, Soldotna and Anchorage are expected. The action kicks off at the rink with a "Meet and Greet" at 5 p.m. Friday night for all teams, followed by the first game at 6:45 p.m.

There will be a fundraising party Saturday from 8 p.m.-midnight at Beluga Lake Lodge for teams and supporters with a silent auction and DJCJ. Proceeds will go back into the rink to help lower costs for ice time. The tournament is sponsored by Beluga Lake Lodge. Teams are sponsored by Homer's Jeans, Fritz Creek, Grant Air, The Alibi, AJ's, Down East Saloon and Salty Dawg.
