Winners of mentor writing contest announced

In honor of January National Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters sponsored a "Mentor Writing Contest."

Contestants were asked to write in either a short story format or a poem about a mentor who had positively changed their lives. The contest was open to the public in all ages. Winners include:

Short Story:

Age group 5-7 years: Indigo Sonneborn;

Age group 8-9 years: Coda Wood;

Age group 10 years: Marina Carroll, Audrey Wallace, Eve Brau and Daisy Kettle;

Age group 11-12 years: Hailey Radford;

Age group 15-18 years: Savely Kalugin.

Poetry:

Age group 13-14 years: Emily Inama;

Age group 5-7 years: Indigo Sonneborn.

Some of the winners will read their entries at the Jan. 17 BBBS Community Free Movie Night, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Homer Theatre. The readings will be followed by a showing of "How To Train Your Dragon." The event is free and open to the public.

BBBS would like to thank all of the local merchants and restaurants providing prizes for the winners.

Judges include BBBS Council members and staff.
