Dennis Novak

Aug. 18, 1940-Nov. 21, 2011

Longtime Homer resident, Mr. Dennis Novak, 71, died Nov. 21, 2011, in Homer. Funeral services were held 12:30 p.m. Dec. 27, 2011, at the Homer Funeral Home on Diamond Ridge Road. Dennis was laid to rest at Hickerson Memorial Cemetery on Diamond Ridge following the funeral services.

Dennis was born in Minneapolis, Minn., and raised in Minneapolis and in Des Moines, Iowa. Dennis served in the U.S. Army and later graduated from the University of New Mexico and University of Arizona with a bachelor of science in geology and geological engineering. One of his hobbies was geology. He collected vast amounts of unusual rocks and minerals from various places he visited.

The Alaska bug bit in 1980 and he came to Homer to experience the great outdoors. He purchased the Bay View Inn in 1985 with the greatest view in Homer across Kachemak Bay. He built a very successful business there for 26 years. He had many return visitors who also came to love what the Bay View had to offer and Dennis's enthusiasm for the area.

He quickly became involved with community affairs beginning with service on the Kachemak Bay State Park Advisory Board, where he was chair for 1984 and 1985. He later became involved with the Homer Chamber of Commerce to promote the community. He served on the board of directors for 1995 through 1997 and was board president in 1997.

In 2003 he was elected to the first of two terms on the Homer City Council, serving until 2009. While on the council he was elected to be mayor pro tempore from 2006 to 2009. He was widely respected for his professionalism and integrity.

Other activities that he enjoyed were photography and fishing. He has many photos of the family through the years and interesting subjects in Homer. He will be remembered for being "one of the good guys."

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank D. Novak and Evelyn H. Novak. He is survived by his sister, Diane Novak of Denver, and four aunts residing in the Minneapolis area: Lorraine Sodd, Margaret Ignatowicz, Dorthee Visintin and Mary Ann Fellegy. There also are numerous cousins in the Minneapolis area.
