State urges online PFD applications

Morris News Service - Alaska

Officials with the Alaska Permanent Fund Division say they're hoping as many as 470,000 residents will apply online for their dividends this year.

The 2008 PFD application period opened Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. The Early Direct Deposit program will continue, and applicants who file online in January and select and qualify for direct deposit will get their money on Oct. 2, 2008, the division said in a press release.

That's two weeks earlier than direct-deposit recipients who file after January. The division will mail checks to all other recipients beginning Nov. 14.

Applying online is relatively easy. Visit www.pfd.alaska.gov to learn about the electronic signature option and to set up a "myAlaska" account. Any adult who got a 2007 PFD can establish a myAlaska account and sign their application electronically with an Alaska driver's license or Alaska ID. Those with myAlaska accounts may also sign their children's applications electronically. The division said applicants who do not want to sign electronically could still apply online and mail a printed signature page to the PFD Division.

Once the myAlaska account is set up, it remains active and does not have to be re-established each year.

"The online application process is a 'win' in every way for applicants," said PFD Division Director Debbie Richter. "It is more secure than mail, provides immediate confirmation of filing, and allows January filers with direct deposit to receive their dividends earlier. We are hoping for at least 470,000 online filers this year."

In 2007, the division received 420,596 online applications, about two-thirds of the 629,000 valid applications received, according to PFD Division Manager Amy Skow.

The 2008 PFD application period runs from Jan. 1, 2008, through March 31, 2008. The amount of the 2008 dividend will be announced in mid-September, the division said.
