Anthony Damek McAllistar Guerra

Anthony Damek McAllistar Guerra, 9, went to be with the Lord at 9 a.m. Aug. 2, 2013, after drowning at Bishop’s Beach on July 25. A celebration of his life is at 4 p.m. Sept. 14, 2013, at Bishop’s Beach, the beach he loved so much.

“Anyone is welcome to come and celebrate with us the life of our amazing guy,” his mother, Katie Brock, said.

Mark Joseph Yohman

A potluck  celebration of  the life of Mark Yohman is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at the Kenai Landings restaurant on Cannery Road (off Kalifornsky Beach Road in Kenai. Bring your favorite yohdog story to tell.

“It’s a great day in a great land,” he always said.

Thomas Wilson “Tom” Temple

Thomas Temple passed away at Alaska Regional Hospital on June 6, 2013, from complications related to his heart transplant. Now that fishing season is over, a memorial will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in Homer at Alice’s Champagne Palace. Juanita Cox

Juanita Cox, 92, born on Aug. 29, 1920, “woke up in the arms of the Lord on the morning of Aug. 13, 2013,” her family said. She passed away peacefully at home in the loving care of her daughter, Donna “Teece” and son-in-law Terry Scovell.

A celebration of life is planned for Sept. 7, 2013, at the Glacierview Baptist Church at a time to be announced.

Olga M. Fomin

Lifelong Alaska Native and Port Graham resident Olga M. Fomin, 58, passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, in Port Graham.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at St. Herman of Alaska Russian Orthodox Church in Port Graham. Pallbearers were Micky Anahonak, Peter Anahonak Jr., Denis Anahonak, Quentin McMullen, Dale Malchoff and Walter Meganack, Jr.

Olga was born Aug. 31, 1954, in Seldovia. She graduated from high school and had also received her associate’s degree.

Caron Coons Davis

Caron Coons Davis, 61, beloved wife of Paul Davis, died peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2013, due to complications from a double lung transplant, and surrounded by family and loved ones.

Lonnie T. Byars

Lonnie Truman Byars, 67, a long-time Alaskan communication systems pioneer who was instrumental in implementing analog, satellite, microwave, digital, and fiber optic systems in Alaska, died June 28, 2013, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage after a lengthy illness beginning with a debilitating stroke he suffered in 2003. 

Carl Frederick Bannick Jr.

Carl Frederick “Fred” Bannick was a familiar face around Homer. He passed away Nov. 20, 2012. His family is holding a memorial service and military service for him at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at the Seafarer’s Memorial on the Spit. A potluck gathering follows at 5 p.m. at Kharacter’s.

“Come one, come all; bring your favorite Fred stories and a dish to pass;” his family said. “Fred was an amazing cook, so do him proud.”

Shirley C. Henry

Shirley Cres Henry, 84, passed away, Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, surrounded by her family at her home in Anchorage.

Memorial services will be held 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at the South Anchorage Church of Christ, 7800 Stanley Drive, Anchorage. She will be laid to rest at the Hickerson Memorial Cemetery in Homer.

Harry John Buccilli

Longtime Alaska resident Mr. Harry John Buccilli, 71, passed away, Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease). 

Mark H. Matthews

Homer resident Mr. Mark Harland Matthews, 61, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, in Homer. 

Mark was born Nov. 19, 1951, to Harland and Alice (Smith) Matthews in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Washington where he graduated high school as well. Mark has lived in Alaska on and off throughout most of his adult life where he lived in Ketchikan, Anchorage, Anchor Point and most recently Homer. He was a carpenter by trade throughout Alaska and Washington. Mark loved seeing new places and meeting new people.  

Kemper L. Sackman

Kemper Lane Sackman, 63, passed away in his sleep in Homer on July 25, 2013.

A celebration of his life will be held from 3-7 p.m., Aug. 17, 2013, at the Down East Saloon.

Kemper was born in Riverton, Wyo., on May 1, 1950, to the late Kemper Eugene and Lois Sackman. His mother was a teacher and thus, Kemper chose to commit his entire life to giving everyone else “an education.” 

Caroline Gill

Caroline Gill died peacefully of old age on Sunday, July 21, 2013, in Homer. She was 95. Born in Wheeling, W.V., to William Brownlee and Levancia Livingston Erskine on April 16, 1918, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Jane; her parents; and her husband, John Joseph Gill.

Lewis J. Byerly

Lewis John Byerly, 55, died July 4, 2013, in Homer, doing what he loved: working on a commercial fishing vessel. A memorial is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at the Seafarers’ Memorial on the Homer Spit, with a potluck to follow.

Martha B. Visger

Homer resident Martha Bernice Visger, 92, passed away June 28, 2013, at South Peninsula Hospital Long Term Care in Homer. A memorial service will be held Aug. 18, 2013, at the Moles Family Funeral Home in Bellingham, Wash.

Martha was born April 3, 1921, in Anchorage to a pioneer Alaskan family. Her father was Evan Jones, the father of Alaska coal mining. A mining engineer, Jones established mines throughout Southcentral Alaska, including Homer, where he founded the Homer Coal Corporation in the 1940s. He died in Homer in 1950.

Lifelong Alaskan and Clam Gulch resident, Peter John Thomas Janke, 15, died Saturday, July 20, 2013, due to an ATV accident near Clam Gulch. 

A celebration of Peter’s life was held at noon Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Peter’s grandmother’s house at Mile 118.4 Sterling Highway.

Homer resident Mrs. Sharon Andregg Howerton-Thomas, 70, died Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. Per Sharon’s request, no services will be held.

Jack Warren Epperson, 91, of Homer, passed away July 9, 2013, after a short illness at his home in Homer. Per Jack’s wishes, no memorial services are planned.

Gilbert F. Marick Jr.

Former Homer and Anchor Point resident Gilbert Franklin Marick Jr., 76, died July 6, 2013, at his home in Burlington, Kan., with his companion, Gretchen Hanson, at his side.

Gilbert was born on April 23, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Gilbert F. Marick Sr. and Gladys “Dixie” Erwin Marick.
