Upcoming events:

Hockey: The Mariner Co-op Hockey team will face off against Kenai Central High School at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 in Kenai.

Wrestling: The Homer Wrestling team will send qualified team members to the State Championships over the weekend being held at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. The wrestling starts at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15 and continues Saturday, Dec. 16.

Girls Basketball: The Homer girls basketball team will gets its first taste of competition during the Kenai River Classic, to be held in Kenai. The girls will play Soldotna High School at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, Eielson at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, and Kenai at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.

Boys Basketball: The boys basketball team will play their first games during the SoHi Tip Off. They will play Seward at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, Service at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, and Eielson at noon Saturday, Dec. 16, all in Soldotna.

Cross-country skiing: Homer’s Nordic ski team competed with hundreds of other skiers in the state last weekend at the Lynx Loppet at Kincaid Park in Anchorage. The results are as follows:

Wrestling: The following is a recap from assistant coach Chris Perk on the wrestling team’s earning a third straight Conference title is past weekend in Seward:

“The Mariners scored 304.5 points; Houston was second with 179. The girls team qualified five girls to the state tourney next weekend at the Alaska Airline Center in Anchorage. Alex Moseley, 120, won her fourth consecutive conference title. She pinned both her opponents including teammate Mina Cavasos. Cavasos a Sophomore finished second and will qualify for state. Freshman Halle Lapp, 132, earned an automatic berth and her first conference title. Junior McKenzie Cook, 145, won her third title with two pins. Cook and Moseley will both be No. 1 seeds next weekend at state. Joining the girls will be Freshman 160-pounder Mariah Grimes. She pinned teammate Sierra Clark before falling to Chloe Grogan of Nikiski in the finals.

“The boys team qualified 11 wrestlers by placing in the top three. Junior Ian Stovall, 132, freshman Josh Bradshaw, 145, and senior Richard Brock, 285, all placed third. Homer was led by junior 132-pounder Luciano Fasulo, who pinned all three of his opponents to go 43-0 this season. He was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches of the nine-team conference. Fasulo, who is very exciting to watch, has wins over all the top ranked Division I wrestlers. It was the third straight season a Homer wrestler has claimed this award. Juniors Seth Inama, 120, and Wayne Newman, 126, dominated their brackets earning their third conference title each. Seniors Chris Cudaback, 170, Levi King, 195, and Kyle Wells, 220 ,all earned championships. Senior Tristen Cook, 182, placed second, but made up some distance on the No. 1 ranked Evan Bockman from Grace. The final championship came from sophomore Mose Hayes, 138. Hayes avenged a loss to Dia Martishev of Voznesenka at 138 pounds. He earned a 6-2 victory and ended the match with Martishev on his back.

“The girls team goes into the state meet ranked No. 2, behind Mt. Edgecumbe, and the boys team is also seeded second behind the defending champions the Bethel Warriors. Freshman Bruce Graham earned a Conference Good Sport Award for his display of spirit and positive enthusiasm towards the team.”
