Girls swim and dive team takes seventh at state championship meet
The Homer Mariners swimmers and divers came back from the 2017 ASAA State Swimming and Diving State Championships in Anchorage with a few new records and a top 10 placing for the girls team.
The Homer girls claimed seventh place out of 20 schools, and were the smallest school in the top 10 overall, according to an email from Paul Story, school counselor and parent of team member Madison Story. In the competition which took place at Bartlett High School on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4, freshman Madison Story herself broke the 100-yard breaststroke record for Homer High School during Friday preliminaries, and then re-broke the record Saturday. She took third in the state for the event, clocking in at 1:08.55, according to final results.
Homer swimmers also extended the girls 200-yard medley relay school record, Story wrote, which they also broke last weekend at the regional competition. The swimmers on that relay were Chloe Bechtol, Story, Alia Bales and Ella Blanton-Yourkowski. Homer also broke the girls 200-yard free relay school record by .02 seconds, Story wrote. Swimmers for that relay were Bales, Blanton-Yourkowski, Adeline Berry and Story.
