Homesteader and longtime Homer resident, Mr. Albert Greer, 90, died Monday, April 7, 2014, at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage.

Funeral services were held at noon Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the Glacier View Baptist Church, 960 East End Road in Homer. Pastor Rick Wise officiated. Burial followed at the Hickerson Memorial Park on Diamond Ridge Road.

Mr. Greer was born Sept. 26, 1923. in St. Louis, Mo. He graduated from Marble Hill High School. Soon after he graduated he joined the U.S. Marines in 1942, and served up until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He moved from Missouri to Utah where he and his wife, Jill, stayed a few months, before making the long trek up to Alaska in 1954. He homesteaded in 1954 on Greer Road.

Albert built what’s known at the “Round House” at the Alyeska Ski Resort in 1961, which was declared as a National Building after the state’s 50th year of statehood. He also was the first licensed building contractor in the city of Homer, which he did for more than 25 years. In 1968 he worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a superintendant up until 1971. He was a member as well as helped build the Glacier View Baptist Church in Homer. Albert loved to go fishing and hunting every chance he got.

The family wrote, “Al will be remembered for his enjoyment of life. He loved being with his family and traveling. He enjoyed building and working with wood and fishing. He will be missed by all of his family and friends.” 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jill Greer; brothers, Mance, Virgil and Gene; and his parents, Frank and Elisa.

He is survived by his son, Jim (Ann) Greer of Homer; grandsons, Eugene Greer, Dan Greer, and Brent (Tracy) Greer; granddaughter, Tracy (Terrell) Moulton of Denver, Colorado; and great-grandchildren, Maggie Tryer and Cody Greer, both of Homer.
