Louis J. Landry

Homer resident Louis J. Landry, 92, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Friendship Terrace in Homer. No services are planned at this time.
Mr. Landry was born July 1, 1920, in Abbeville, La., to Giles and Mamas Landry. He was raised on a farm in Henry, La., and graduated from Henry High School in 1937 along with six other students. He had attended welding school in New Orleans and was working in the shipyards when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He immediately joined the U.S. Marine Corps. During the war he participated in the Treasury-Bougainville operation, the Bismarck Archipelago campaign, the defense of Piva Yoke and the consolidation of the Northern Solomon Islands.
After being discharged from the Marine Corps, he met and married his wife, Ruth Voss. They moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., but after a short time, finally settled in Williams, Ariz.
Louis enjoyed bowling as a participant and coach. He helped his great-grandsons with fishing. One of his earlier favorites was the Bill Williams Mountain Men of Williams, Ariz. He was a charter member of this group that was Arizona’s designee for Pres. John F. Kennedy’s inauguration.
Mr. Landry worked as a welder, auto body repairman, a U.S. Forest Service firefighter, and a high school vocational teacher.
Continuing his life of change and adventure, he moved to Homer. He made many friends, bowled and fished with the relish with which he lived life. He loved his family and was proud of his Cajun heritage.
He finally met his life’s goal of meeting his Saviour, Jesus Christ. Semper Fi to God, family, country and friends.
Louis was a member of the United Methodist Church of Homer.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Giles and Mamas Landry, and his wife, Ruth.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tonia and Duane Landry Parlow of Homer; son and daughter-in-law, Kit and Lee Landry of Manito, Ill.; grandchildren and spouses, John and Renee Parlow Courtney of Peoria, Ariz., Joshua and Carin Landry Watson of Manito, Ill., Chad and Cheryl Hickman Landry of Tremont, Ill., Jason and Katie Landry Troha of Bedford, Texas; Ben and Lauren Landry Cosgrove of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Chad and Pam Perkins Parlow of Beaverton, Ore.; great-grandchildren, Dillon and Dalton Hesselschwerdt of Peoria, Ariz.; and step-great-grandchildren, Thomas and Sophia Especiale of Tremont, Ill.
