State Trooper Reports

July 28

Bureau of Highway Patrol troopers at 6:30 p.m. went to Mile 117 Sterling Highway for a car-motorcycle crash. Troopers said a 51-year-old Georgia man driving north in a black 2013 Kia fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the center line and hit a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by a 46-year-old Connecticut man. The motorcycle rider wore a helmet and suffered serious leg injuries. He was medevaced to Providence Alaska Medical Center, Anchorage. The Kia driver wore his seatbelt. Troopers cited him for negligent driving.

Aug. 1

Troopers patrolling near the Salmonstock music festival in Ninilchik saw a man urinating at the rear of a motorhome and facing the highway in plain view of passing drivers and pedestrians. Troopers cited the man, age 31 of Anchorage, for second-degree indecent exposure.

Aug. 2

Troopers received a report of an assault in Port Graham. At 2 p.m. Aug. 3, weather cleared and troopers were able to charter a plane and respond. Troopers located the suspect, a 29-year-old Port Graham woman, at her home. They arrested her for fourth-degree assault, domestic violence, and took her to the Homer Jail.

Troopers at 7:26 p.m. made a traffic stop on a 67-year-old Homer man driving near Mile 157 Sterling Highway after seeing the man not wearing a seatbelt. Troopers said the man had a suspended driver’s license and cited him for failure to carry liability insurance and cited him for driving while license suspended.

Troopers at 8:35 p.m. made a traffic stop on a 29-year-old Anchor Point man near Mile 157 Sterling Highway after seeing his car had studded tires. Troopers cited him from driving in violation of his instructional permit.

Aug. 3

Alaska State Troopers at 7:05 a.m. went to a report of an assault in progress at an Anchor Point home. Troopers allege a 22-year-old Anchor Point woman placed a family member in fear of imminent physical injury. Troopers were unable to locate the woman and have asked the court for a warrant for her arrest for fourth-degree assault. 

Troopers at 11:30 p.m. went to a car-moose collision near Mile 155 Sterling Highway. Troopers said a 63-year-old Homer woman driving south in a 1999 Ford sedan hit a moose when it darted into the road. The woman wore her seatbelt and was uninjured. The crash killed the moose and caused major damage to the car.

Aug. 4

Troopers at 12:27 a.m. went to a car crash with injuries near Mile 165 Sterling Highway. Troopers said a 37-year-old man driving south in a red 2000 Toyota sedan went off the road. The car rolled and ejected the driver, who did not wear his seatbelt. The car pinned the driver underneath it. Anchor Point EMTS responded and extracted the driver. He was taken to South Peninsula Hospital with major injuries. Troopers said the Toyota had been stolen earlier that night from the Homer Spit. Charges are pending for driving under the influence and first-degree vehicle theft.

Aug. 5

Troopers went to a car crash near mile 125.5 Sterling Highway in Ninilchik. Troopers said a 38-year-old Louisiana women driving south in a 1991 Audi sedan took her eyes off the road and crossed the centerline, hitting a 2004 Chevrolet truck driven by a 25-year-old Soldotna woman. A juvenile passenger in the Louisiana woman’s car had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. The cars hit at an angle and had disabling damage. Troopers cited the Louisiana woman.

Aug. 6

Troopers at 4:07 a.m. made a traffic stop on a 35-year-old Homer man driving a Chevrolet truck on Moose Run Road near Echo Lake Road in Soldotna. Troopers arrested the driver and his passenger, a 31-year-old Homer man, for two counts each of fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.

Aug. 7

Troopers at 8:35 p.m. contacted a 35-year-old Halibut Cove man at Mariner Park on the Homer Spit after seeing him drive recklessly near a pedestrian on the beach and drive in a closed area of the beach. Troopers arrested the man for DUI.

Aug. 8

Troopers at 5:22 p.m. received a report of a shirtless man running into traffic and acting erratically near Mile 166 Sterling Highway in Homer. The men fled on foot when troopers contacted him, and then challenged troopers to fight by swinging his fists toward them. The man fell onto the ground and troopers arrested him for disorderly conduct.

Aug. 9

Troopers at 11:07 p.m. went to a report of a vehicle in the ditch near North Fork Road and Cottonwood Drive in Anchor Point. Troopers found a 2000 Ford Ranger had rolled after the driver lost control on the North Fork Road. The driver, a 55-year-old Homer man, appeared to be drunk and refused to leave the truck, troopers said. Troopers had to remove him from the truck and he resisted with force. They arrested him for DUI and driving while license revoked. He continued to be uncooperative with troopers and Anchor Point EMTs. EMTs took the man to the hospital, where he yelled vulgar language while in the presence of other patients. He refused to stop yelling, troopers said. They charged him with disorderly conduct. After being checked at the hospital, troopers took him to the Homer Jail and said he spat in the face of a trooper. The man also refused to provide a breath sample. Troopers also found a loaded handgun in his car and that his car had false registration with a handmade expiration tab. Troopers also charged the man with first-degree harassment, refusing to submit to a chemical test, fourth-degree weapons misconduct and misuse of license plate.

Aug. 10

Troopers at 9:26 p.m. went to a car crash on the Old Sterling Highway near Alligator Alley. Troopers arrested the driver, a 24-year-old Michigan man, for DUI. The car was a total loss.
