Kenai’s boys and girls varsity soccer teams came out victorious against Homer High School during the Tuesday, April 26, games at Homer High. Both games finished with scores of 5-1. Homer girls varsity is now 1-2 in conference, while the boys are 0-3.
Andie Sonnen scored the girls’ only goal. Charles Rohr scored the boys’ single point.
The teams will travel up to Wasilla and Houston for conference games Friday and Saturday.
Mariner soccer played two games against Kodiak on April 22 and 23, the first of which did not count on the Northern Lights Conference record. Girls took two victories over the weekend, while the boys lost both games.
Despite the girls’ wins, girls varsity head coach Mike Tozzo is still working with the team on playing hard when they first hit the field. In Friday’s game, Homer scored one out of their eight goals in the first half. Saturday’s game picked up a bit with two out of the five goals scored in the first half.
Homer girls 5, Kodiak 0
The visiting Mariners evened their Northern Lights Conference Southern Division record at 1-1 with the shutout.
“It was a big win for us,” Tozzo said. “It was good for us to come over to Kodiak and win both games, including the one that counted today.”
Andie Sonnen, assisted by Megan Pitzman, had the game’s lone goal in the first half.
In the second half, Sydney Lee scored in the 42nd minute, Raisa Basargin scored in the 50th minute assisted by Sam Draves, Uliana Reutov scored in the 53rd minute assisted by Lee, and Reutov scored in the 61st minute unassisted.
Alison McCarron had the shutout in net for the Mariners.
Tozzo said he moved Rachel Ellert from center forward or midfield to stopper and she did a great job at the position.
“We didn’t play our best at times, but we were moving people around and there is a learning curve for the new positions,” Tozzo said. “It was a good weekend for us.”
Kodiak boys 3, Homer 2
The host Bears dropped the Mariners to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Southern Division.
“I think we lost to a little older and a little wiser team,” Waldorf said.
Simon Dye had both goals for the Mariners.
Homer girls 8, Kodiak 1
The Mariners cruised to a dominant Northern Lights Conference victory over the Bears Friday evening in Kodiak.
Uliana Reutov recorded a hat trick to lead Homer’s charge, and Sam Draves played a scoreless first half in goal for the Mariners. Allison McCarron replaced Draves in goal for the second half, giving the senior some time out front. Draves made it count with a goal of her own.
Sydney Lee opened the scoring for Homer and Reutov added on for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
A Reutov goal early in the second half made it 3-0, and later completed her hat trick to make it 5-0. Raisa Basargin, Megan Pitzman, Draves and Rachel Ellert all added scoring strikes in the second half as well.
Kodiak boys 4, Homer 0
The host Bears notched a shutout victory over the Mariners on Friday in a game that did not count for the Northern Lights Conference Southern Division.
