Homer Popeye wrestlers completed the two-day 2nd Annual Steve Wolf Memorial Popeye Wrestling Club Tournament on March 11-12, raking in a total of 72 first, second and third place wins. The team will be off to Anchorage Avalanche and Seward for greco and freestyle competitions this weekend.
The all-girls tournament on March 11 registered 52 wrestlers. Popeye had 12 girls wrestling with two in first place, nine in second place, and one in third place. It was also National Women’s Wrestling week and girls were encouraged to wrestle free of charge at a sanctioned club from March 5-13, which brought in a few more girls to Popeye’s practice and tournament.
The March 11 folkstyle tournament had a total of 177 wrestlers. Popeye entered 23 wrestlers and won four first place, six second place and four third place awards.
The March 12 freestyle tournament had the biggest number of competitors, with 408 participating wrestlers. Popeye had 31 wrestlers registered and took home eight first place, seven second place and five third place wins.
